For me the jury is still out. What I have learned is UberXL is more popular on the weekends and during events.  Some of my friends have had some really good days Monday thru Friday but even their results on UberXL are best during the weekends and events.

Having driven UberX for most of my 3.5 years in rideshare, its a mental challenge for me to focus strictly on the UberXL platform. I know I like my income  being at a certain level but I’m still seeking a balance of the trade off between the operating costs of using an UberXL vehicle and profiting mostly on the weekends.

What Is The Difference Between UberX and UberXL? Well, let’s throw in volume. Although the UberX trip request happen more frequently, unless there is a Surge, Boost or a Quest attached to the rides, the fares are typically low.

As you can see in the video below, I was after all three types of incentives.

What Is The Difference Between UberX and UberXL? Since the UberXL trip request don’t come as frequent during the weekdays (unless there is possibly an event), I found myself doing a lot of waiting.  Also, I would drive over to areas where Uber would be offering a Boost and “hope” to get an UberXL ride. This cost me a lot of time and money in fuel and operating costs.

A Solution?

What some of my friends recommended (See my video on networking with other Uber drivers), was since I had received UberXL trip requests from my home then I should simply stay in the area instead of driving where Uber was offering the Boost.

So instead of driving 25-30 minutes away to sit and wait for a ping in the Boost area, I would drive to a highly commercial area with hotels that was only about 10-15 minutes away.

The challenge is with doing this is I’m still waiting for long periods of time and I’m not in the Boost area so even if I was to do an UberX trip, the only incentive available would be Surge or Quest.

So what is the difference between UberX and UberXL?

Well, at the end of the day I’m still working on a system that I can duplicate on a weekly basis which keeps my income steady. I have noticed some rider will choose UberXL because they don’t like small cars. They could be by themselves but they will still opt to pay more for the larger vehicle.

Personally, I think the UberXL rate should be higher especially when dealing with the groups of people who climb in and out of your vehicle. The majority of UberXL riders are mainly people who would normally take an UberX ride if they were alone. There is always talk of splitting the bill.

The ideal vehicle in my opinion to generate the greatest amount of income would be a luxury SUV which could not only work on the UberX profile but on the UberSelect and UberXL profiles as well.

What has been your experience with driving an UberXL vehicle? Your response could also apply to Lyft Plus as well.
